Chairs are structural engineering disguised as furniture. Every joint is small, every part is slim, and the whole thing gets racked, tipped, and leaned back on for decades. Chair woods need real strength at small cross-sections, which is why chairmaking tradition centers on tough, shock-resistant species, many of which also steam-bend well for backs and arms.

Recommended joinery

The most punishing joinery in furniture: every joint is small, loads are high and constantly reversing as people lean and tip, and there's little room for bulk. Joint quality decides whether a chair survives.

    Both loosen under the reversing loads a chair sees; fine for jigs or secondary parts, risky for structure.
