Interlocked grain makes it almost unsplittable, superb for steam-bending and chair seats. Once everywhere before Dutch elm disease; still a tough, handsome utility wood.

Light reddish-brown heartwood with a coarse, interlocked grain and attractive cathedral figure; pale sapwood.
